Women's Soccer blanked by UNC-Pembroke

PEMBROKE, NC -- Melanie Cobb scored the game’s only goal six minutes into the contest to give the University of North Carolina at Pembroke a 1-0 victory over 23rd-ranked Catawba in women’s soccer action on Tuesday night at the Belk Athletic Complex. The Lady Indians fall to 1-2 with the loss, while UNCP ups its record to 2-0. The lone goal of the night came off the foot of Melanie Cobb thanks to a leading pass by Kelly Jones. UNCP used Cobb’s goal and a staunch defense to ward off Catawba. Braves goalkeeper Whitney Beverly, who earned the win, played strong down the stretch and tallied three saves, while Catawba’s Cathrine Balentine took the loss and also posted three saves. “It was a familiar story to the first game of the season,” stated Catawba coach John Cullen. “We gave away a goal we shouldn’t have and then had numerous chances to get back into the game. Teams are getting a goal on us and then they pack it in on defense and make it difficult for us to break through. We are getting opportunities, but just ddin’t quite get the job done.” #####
