Volleyball splits two matches on opening day of AASU Tournament

SAVANNAH, GA -- Catawba played a pair of five-game matches and grabbed one win on the opening day of the 2005 AASU Chatham Orthopaedics Pirate Volleyball Classic on Friday. The Lady Indians lost to USC-Aiken and defeated host Armstrong Atlantic to move to 4-3 on the year. Against USC-Aiken, Catawba dropped the opening game 32-20, but fought back to take games two and three 30-24 and 30-28. USCA was able to pull out a 30-28 win in the fourth game and prevailed 15-11 in the fifth. Freshman Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA) led Catawba with 18 kills and 21 digs, while Amanda Nantz (Troutman, NC) added 17 kills and three blocks. Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC) had 61 assists with Missy Bartholomew (New Carlisle, IN) picking up 28 digs. Catawba would lose the opening game to host Armstrong Atlantic by a 30-27 count, but evened the match with its own 30-27 win in game two. AASU won 30-23 in game three with the Lady Indians rolling to a 30-14 win in game four and took the match with a 16-14 decision in game five. Griffith delivered 20 kills and added 19 digs in the win. Nantz had 13 kills and four blocks. Henderson dished out 47 assists and added 10 kills and 11 digs. #######
