Fisher runs for 192 in Football's 37-18 win at Virginia St.
PETERSBURG, VA -- Sophomore tailback Kory Fisher (New Bern, NC) ran for 192 yards and two scores as 13th-ranked Catawba defeated host Virginia State 37-18 in football action on Saturday night at Rogers Stadium. The Indians remain undefeated at 3-0, while Virginia State falls to 1-2.
Catawba fell behind 13-0 early in the second quarter, but scored 24 points in the final eight minutes before the break to grab the lead. Curtis Johnson gave the Trojans their 13-0 lead, scoring from six yards out with 9:29 left in the second quarter. An unsportsmanlike conduct foul on the point after helped spark Catawba as Trevan Davis (Thomasville, NC) returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards to the VSU 33. From there, Catawba was able to get on the board on a Rush Rollins (Kannapolis, NC) 32-yard field goal.
The Tribe defense held VSU and Fisher went 66 yards to bring Catawba within 13-10 at the 4:35 mark of the quarter. Catawba’s defense would come up big on their next two plays. Thomas Pressley (Goldsboro, NC) had an interception and return inside the Trojan five which led to a six-yard scoring pass from Brad Roach (Williamston, NC) to Rod Tenor (Cooleemee, NC). On the next play, Charles Morman (Rockingham, NC) picked off a pass which also led to a Roach to Tenor score. The second came from five yards out with just 10 seconds remaining before the half.
The Trojans pulled within 24-18 early in the third quarter on a safely and a 42-yard field goal by Musa Conteh. Catawba responded with a 13-play, 71-yard drive that culminated on a 25-yard Rollins field goal with 25 seconds remaining in the quarter for a 27-18 edge.
Brandon McIntyre (Burgaw, NC) recorded the Tribe’s third pick of the night early in the fourth quarter and Fisher would score on an 11-yard run with 10 minutes remaining. Catawba out-gained the Trojans 368 to 122 on the night with the defense causing four turnovers and recording four sacks. Matt Sheets (Lexington, NC) blocked two punts in the fourth quarter. The defense also held VSU to just one of 13 on third down conversions.
Fisher carried 31 times for his 192 yards and two scores, adding four catches for 36 yards. Roach was 15-of-29 through the air for 123 yards and two scores, but was intercepted three times. Thomas Boyd ran for 54 yards to lead VSU on the ground, while Lamar Blizzard was the most effective of the three Trojan quarterbacks, completing 6-of-9 passes for 35 yards.
