Fisher and Sheets tabbed as SAC Football Players of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. --- The South Atlantic Conference has announced its Football Players of the Week. Earning honors for the week ending on September 10 are Catawba running back Kory Fisher, Presbyterian defensive end Nick Willis and Catawba defensive back Matt Sheets. Fisher was named Offensive Player of the Week, Willis Defensive Player of the Week and Sheets was tabbed Special Teams Player of the Week.
Fisher, a 5-10, 195-pound sophomore from New Bern, N.C., ran for a career-best 192 yards on 31 carries in Catawba’s 37-18 win at Virginia State on Saturday. Fisher’s rushing performance was the sixth-best in school history. The New Bern High School alum scored two touchdowns, the first coming on a 66-yard run. Fisher was also the Indian’s top receiver as he made four catches for 36 yards. On the day, he accounted for 228 all-purpose yards for the Tribe.
Sheets, a 5-11, 180-pound junior from Lexington, N.C., blocked two fourth quarter punts to help keep Virginia State off the board in the final period of Catawba’s road victory. The second block set up the Indians’ final scoring drive with five minutes remaining. Sheets, from West Davidson High School, has blocked three punts in his collegiate career.
Willis, a 6-1, 236-pound native of Saluda, S.C. tallied eight tackles to lead Presbyterian to a 42-0 victory over NCAA Division I-AA Charleston Southern. The Blue Hose are off to their first 3-0 start since 1979. Willis led the PC defense that forced four turnovers. Along with his eight tackles, two were for loss of seven yards, including a sack. He recovered a fumble and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown, ending CSU’s opening drive of the second half to put the game away.
The SAC Football Players of the Week are selected by a vote of the league’s eight sports information directors.
