Football earns second straight shutout

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College, ranked sixth in the AFCA NCAA II coaches poll, moved to 2-0 on the season with a 37-0 victory over visiting NCAA I-AA Austin Peay on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. Catawba's defense surrendered just 87 yards on the day, caused five turnovers and recorded five sacks in the win. Austin Peay falls to 0-2. Catawba drove 63 yards in eight plays with the opening kickoff, scoring on freshman Rodney Wallace's (Bamberg, SC) one-yard run. The Governors would fumble on their second play from scrimmage and Wallace scored from 12 yards out, four plays later, to push the lead to 14-0 just over five minutes into the game. The only score of the second quarter came on a 16-yard pass from Scott Sensing (Thomasville, NC)to Cedric Squirewell (Ridgeway, SC). Squirewell would extend his school-record consecutive games with a catch streak to 24. The score was 21-0 at the half with the Tribe defense limiting Austin Peay to one first down and 43 yards in the opening 30 minutes. In the third quarter, Matt Gross (Hendersonville, NC) set a new Catawba career scoring record when he kicked a 20-yard field goal, ending the game with 243 points. The Tribe would put the game away late in the third quarter as Sensing connected with tight end Mark Sintich (Lawrenceville, GA) for a 75-yard score for a 31-0 lead with 1:37 remaining in the quarter. Tony Hawkins (Fayetteville NC) led the Catawba ground attack with 76 yards on eight carries, while Mark Melvin (Whiteville, NC) added 50 yards. Catawba totaled 233 yards on the ground and added 187 through the air. Sensing was 7-of-16 for 177 yards and two scores. For Austin Peay, Brian Baker (Loganville, GA) completed 14-of-22 passes for 77 yards and Brandon Garner (St. Louis, MO) rushed for 21 yards on six attempts.
