Volleyball falls in tight match at TusculumGREENEVILLE, TN -- Tusculum defeated Catawba 3-1 in South Atlantic Confernece volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Arena. Game scores were 30-23, 27-30, 30-28, and 30-27. With the victory, Tusculum improves to 4-10 overall and 1-4 in the SAC, snapping a 35-match SAC losing streak. Catawba slips to 7-6 and 2-2. Junior Vanessa Fortes (San Francisco, CA) led Tusculum with 15 kills, while Amanda Trent (Chattanooga, TN) chipped in 10. Trent also recorded a team-high 34 digs, and sophomore Alexis Rowles (Simpsonville, SC) bolstered the Pioneers' defensive efforts with 31 digs. Freshman Vanessa Kinsler (Gray, TN) tallied six block assists, and fellow rookie Kylie Lewallen (Lincoln, NE) dished out 21 assists. For Catawba, freshman Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA) posted a team-best 14 kills, and junior Amanda Nantz (Troutman, NC) had 13 kills. Sophomore Missy Bartholomew (New Carlisle, IN) dug 28 balls, and freshman Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC) aided the Lady Indians' defensive efforts with four block assists. Sophomore Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC) recorded a team-high 46 assists. In game one, the teams played to 23-23 tie before the Pioneers gained a 24-23 edge and took control to take a 30-23 victory. Late in the second game, Catawba built some distance with a 26-23 advantage, but TC battled back to pull to within 28-27 heading down the home stretch. The Pioneers could get no closer, as the Lady Indians tied the match at one game apiece with a 30-27 win in the frame. Catawba surged to a 12-4 lead in the third stanza and held the advantage for much of the game, with TC pulling to within one point on several occasions but never able to pull even. Finally, with the game winding down, the Pioneers tied the score at 28-28, then dug deep to pull off the come-from-behind win. The squads battled evenly throughout much of the final stanza, and TC threatened to take control late with a 22-17 lead. The Lady Indians pulled to within 22-21, but the Pioneers staved off any further come-back efforts to close out the match victory. #####
