Women's Soccer edges Mars Hill 2-1

MARS HILL, NC – McKenzie Burman (Rolesville, NC) scored from 30 yards out with eight minutes left in the first frame to lead the Indians of Catawba College past Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action at Meares Stadium. The Indians improved to 6-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. Lions fell to 6-4 overall and 0-3.Catawba got on the board first after MHC recorded an own goal at the 18:50 mark. Leigh Telzrow (Dalls, TX) headed a corner kick that was deflected at the last minute by a defender. Then 33:51 into the first period, Burman hit the back of the net from around 30 yards out to score what would later prove to be the match winner. Burman leads Catawba with 10 goals on the season. MHC came within 2-1 late in the contest when Katie Powell (Huntersville, NC) hit a shot past Catawba’s keeper on a cross from Jasmine Riley (Arlington, VA). It was Powell’s second goal of the season. Catawba out shot MHC 14-to-10. Catawba also had five corner kicks to the Lions one. The first goal Catawba scored was off a corner kick that deflected off a MHC player into the Lions goal. Claudia Cala (Hamilton, NJ) played all 90 minutes in goal for MHC and made seven saves in the loss. Catherine Balentine (Charlotte, NC) also played the entire match in the net for the Indians and made five saves. "We played exceptionally well," said Catawba Coach John Cullen. "I'm very proud of the girls as they won another conference game on the road and won it with style."
