Football drops league opener at Presbyterian

CLINTON, SC -- Presbyterian College held the No. 22 ranked Catawba College Indians to 60 yards on the ground, while the Blue Hose offense rolled out 398 yards of total offense en route to a 37-7 victory over the Indians in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon in Bailey Memorial Stadium. The Blue Hose improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 3-2 and 0-1.
The Blue Hose defense keyed the win by forcing a safety, blocking one field goal attempt, and pulling down one interception on the day.  The PC offense continued their balanced attack with 167 yards rushing while throwing for 231 yards on the day.

PC took the opening kickoff and drove 78 yards on 10 plays as senior quarterback Zach Ellis (Tifton, GA) found senior halfback Corey Mitchell (Dalzel, SC) for a 12-yard TD strike to go ahead 7-0.  The Blue Hose defense forced a pair of three-and-outs on Catawba's first two possessions and the Blue Hose went back to work.  Ellis led the team on a seven-play, 55-yards drive which ended with Ellis scoring on a one-yard QB keeper to put the Blue Hose ahead 14-0 at the 5:07 mark of the first quarter.

The PC defense got on the scoreboard in the second quarter as junior linebacker Justin Jones (Carrollton, GA) sacked Indian sophomore quarterback Brad Roach (Williamston, NC) in the endzone for a safety to increase the lead to 16-0.  PC's sophomore punter Stuart Mull (Morganton, NC) had pinned the Indians inside their 10 yard line on the last possession with a 49-yard punt.  Later in the quarter, Ellis led the Blue Hose offense on their third scoring drive of the first half, this time for 59 yards on nine plays.  The drive ended with Ellis finding sophomore wideout Justin Durant (Florence, SC) for a 13-yard touchdown as PC led 23-0 at the half.  PC's defense controlled the first half by holding the Indian offense to 39 yards on 26 plays and no first downs.

Catawba (3-2 overall, 0-1 SAC) took the second half kickoff and drove 56 yards on eight plays, but stalled on the PC 24-yardline.  The Indians setup for a 41-yard field goal, but the Blue Hose defense came up big as junior linebacker Derrell Doe (Allendale, SC) blocked the field goal to end the scoring drive.

The Indians finally scored on their third possession of the second half as Roach found junior wideout Trevan Davis (Thomasville, NC) for a 44-yard TD strike to complete a 78-yard drive and cut the lead to 23-7.  The Blue Hose offense responded with a six-play, 74-yard drive which ended with junior wideout Chris Pope (Ninety-Six, S.C.) scoring from 10 yards out on rushing play to push the lead to 30-7.  PC added their final touchdown of the day midway through the fourth quarter as freshman halfback Chetyuane Reeder (Clinton, SC) scored from five yards out to cap the scoring.

Offensively, Ellis led the Blue Hose with 231 yards passing and two TD's on 24-of-32 completions while completing passes to eight different receivers.  He also rushed for one touchdown.  Senior wideout Kip McAlister (Richburg, SC) caught five passes for 77 yards while Durant caught six passes for 36 yards and one score.  Nine different players for PC rushed the ball on the day with junior halfback Corey Fidler (Savannah, GA) ran for a team-high 54 yards on 10 carries while Reeder added 42 yards on eight carries and one score.

Catawba was led on the day by Roach who completed 19-of-45 passes for 276 yards and one score to go along with one interception.  Davis led the receivers with four catches for 91 yards and one score, while senior wideout Rod Tenor (Cooleemee, NC) caught four passes for 118 yards.

Defensively, PC was led by Doe who tallied six total stops to go along with one interception, two pass defenses, three quarterback hurries, and one blocked field goal.  Catawba was led on defense by junior linebacker Bryan Biggs (Fayetteville, NC) who tallied a game-high 11 total stops.
