Wallace carries Football into quarterfinals

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College was able to out-score the nation’s top-ranked pass offense and advanced to the NCAA II quarterfinals for the third straight year with a 35-34 win over Central Arkansas on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The win improves Catawba, ranked seventh by the AFCA, to 10-1, while the Bears, ranked 14th, end their season at 9-3. Catawba overcame a 31-20 halftime deficit, holding the Bears to a lone fourth quarter field goal in the second half. The Tribe capitalized on a UCA fumble early in the third quarter to gain the momentum. Following the turnover, Luke Samples dove over from a yard out to trim the margin to 31-28 with 5:33 to go in the quarter. Central Arkansas was able to answer the score with a field goal, coming after a 14-play, 56-yard drive. Justin Smith converted from 32 yards out with 14:12 remaining. After the UCA score, Nick Means returned the ensuing kickoff 55 yards to the Bear 39-yard line. Freshman Rodney Wallace burst up the middle for 19 yards to the 20, then scored from three yards out to put the Tribe on top 35-34 with 12:56 left. Catawba was able to hold Central Arkansas on the next two possessions and was able to run out the clock. Catawba faced a third-and-20 with just over a minute to play when Samples went up top for 31 yards to Arnold Gaither to the UCA 15 and seal the win. Catawba struck first after an interception by defensive lineman James McDowell set the Tribe up on the UCA 22, less than two minutes into the game. Wallace carried twice, the last nine yards for a score. He ran for 119 of his game-high 185 yards in the opening half. The teams traded touchdowns for most of the first half. Central Arkansas took a 21-20 lead with 6:53 left in the half, then scored a minute later following a Catawba fumble on the kickoff to lead 28-20. Wallace led the Catawba offense with his 185 yards and scored twice. Samples completed 14-of-23 passes for 160 yards and one score. Brian Stallworth led Central Arkansas with three touchdown passes. He completed 19-of-27 passes for 218 yards. Michael Norvell had 10 catches for 120 yards. Catawba goes to Georgia to battle the Valdosta State Blazers Nov. 24.
