Football wins wild finish at Wingate 30-24 in overtime
MONROE, NC -- Catawba scored twice in the final six minutes then got a 15-yard scoring run from Kory Fisher (New Bern, NC) in overtime as the Indians rallied past host Wingate to take a 30-24 victory in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Belk Stadium and Martin Field. With the win, Catawba improves to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 5-1 and 2-1.
Wingate built a 24-10 lead with two third quarter scores. Anthony Metzelaars (Charlotte, NC) tossed a 41-yard pass to Dan Brooks (Monroe, NC) at the 4:41 mark and tossed a 17-yard strike to Gary Tatum (Hope Mills, NC) with 1:14 to go in the quarter.
Catawba cut the margin to 24-17 with 5:49 to play when Brad Roach (Williamston, NC) went deep to Trevan Davis (Thomasville, NC) for a 58-yard score. The Tribe defense intercepted Metzelaars with just under two minutes to play, giving Catawba the ball at its own 41 to set up the tying drive.
Roach completed a key third-and-10 pass to Davis for 15 yards and hit Colin Reese (Charlotte, NC) for 13 yards on a fourth-and-10 to sustain the drive. A pass to Fisher went to the Wingate three with less than 20 seconds to play, but with no timeouts Catawba ran a quarterback sneak instead of spiking the ball with less than 10 seconds left. Roach was stopped in a pile and the clock stopped briefly with 1.9 seconds left to spot the ball. The Indians were then able to spike the ball with .7 seconds left and Roach threw a touchdown pass to Rod Tenor (Cooleemee, NC) on the final play of regulation. Rush Rollins (Kannapolis, NC) kicked the tying point to send the game to overtime.
Wingate’s Jonathan Bedford (Charlotte, NC) missed on a 37-yard field goal as the Bulldogs had first possession of overtime. Catawba gave the ball to Fisher three times and the sophomore burst up the middle from 15 yards out to end the game. Fisher ended the game with a game-high 112 yards on 18 carries.
Catawba broke a scoreless tie on the first play of the second quarter as Roach dove in from a yard out. Wingate would tie the game on its ensuing possession as Metzelaars found Brooks from 17 yards out. The teams traded field goals just before the half as Rollins converted for the Tribe from 22 yards with 2:32 left and Bedford connected from 35 yards on the final play of the opening half.
Mario Crowe (Charlotte, NC) followed Fisher with 72 yards on 12 carried for Catawba. Roach was 27-of-51 for 254 yards and two scores. Corey Ready (Aiken, SC) had 11 receptions for 115 yards. Catawba out-gained Wingate 416 yards to 322.
Rip Smith (Union, SC) ran for 70 yards for the Bulldogs, who netted just 46 yards on the ground. Metzelaars completed 11-of-24 passes for 215 yards and three scores. Dustin Matthews (Charlotte, NC) had four grabs for 104 yards.
