Burman nets OT winner with nine seconds left to lift Women's Soccer over CN

JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Catawba’s McKenzie Burman (Rolesville, NC) scored two goals, including the game-winner with nine seconds remaining in the second overtime, as the Lady Indians defeated Carson-Newman 2-1 in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon. The loss by the Lady Eagles was the first SAC loss by C-N this season and broke an eight-match regular season winning streak in conference. C-N falls to 10-3, 3-1 in the SAC. Catawba wins its ninth straight match to 10-2 and 5-0. The Lady Indians scored late in the first half as Burman netted an unassisted goal when she scored on a break-away. The Lady Indians looked to have the match in hand late in the second half but Jenny Bock (Stevensville, MI) scored off a header on a corner kick by Rebecca Nulph (Lebanon, OH) at the 88:23 mark. After a scoreless first overtime period, the two teams battled and appeared to be headed toward a tie when Kelly Fearman (Allison, Ontario, CANADA) intercepted a kick from deep and found Burman for the game-winner with nine seconds remaining. Catawba goalkeeper Catherine Balentine (Charlotte, NC) had a huge game, finishing the match with 13 saves. Burman has scored the last seven goals for Catawba. She now has 16 goals for the year, just one shy of her school season record of 17 she shares with Catey Conner. “I am very, very proud of the team and how hard they worked for each other,” said Catawba Coach John Cullen. “We beat an excellent Carson-Newman team. They are very well coached and we had to work extremely hard to get the result. That makes it even more satisfying to go on the road and beat a good team.” SCORE BY PERIOD CATAWBA (10-2, 5-0) 1 0 1 -- 2 CARSON-NEWMAN (10-3, 3-1) 0 1 0 -- 1 C - 48:20 – McKenzie Burman (15) CN – 88:23 – Jenny Bock (Rebecca Nulph) C - 109:51 – Burman (16) (Kelly Fearman) Shots: Carson-Newman 19, Catawba 3 Corner Kicks: Carson-Newman 7, Catawba 3 Saves: CN – Melissa Terrell 1 CAT – Cathrine Balentine 13 Fouls: Carson-Newman 12, Catawba 12 Offsides: Catawba 2, Carson-Newman 2 Cautions: None Att: 150 #######
