Football loses in 2OT to Newberry 43-37

SALISBURY, NC -- Sophomore Antwan Surratt (Spartanburg, SC) caught a 25-yard pass from Josh Stepp (Pelion, SC) on Newberry’s first play of the second overtime as the visiting Indians defeated host Catawba 43-37 in double overtime in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field.  The catch capped a career-day for Surratt, who caught 13 passed for 178 yards and two scores.  Newberry evens its record at 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 5-3 and 2-2.

In the first overtime, Tymere Zimmerman (Bennettsville, SC) caught a 10-yard pass from Stepp, who threw for 425 yards and a school-record six touchdowns on the day, to put Newberry up 37-30.  Catawba answered when Brad Roach (Williamston, NC) tossed a nine-yard pass to Colin Reese (Charlotte, NC) on fourth down.  Catawba missed a field goal on the first possession of the second overtime.

Newberry had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Catawba’s Pierre Deshauteurs (Pisgah Forest, NC) blocked a point-after attempt with 1:35 remaining.  Catawba drove just over midfield, but Roach had his arm hit and was intercepted by Chad Grant (N. Augusta, SC) at the Newberry 10.  Newberry moved to the Catawba 27, but Ryan Lukshis (Irmo, SC) was wide on a 44-yard field goal attempt.

Catawba grabbed a halftime lead be scoring 10 points in the final three and half minutes.  Newberry had grabbed a 21-14 lead on a 12-yard pass from Stepp to Zimmerman, but Catawba struck quickly as Roach connected with Trevan Davis (Thomasville, NC) for a 93-yard score.  Rush Rollins (Kannapolis, NC) kicked a 20-yard field goal with 35 seconds to go before the half to give Catawba a 24-21 edge.

The teams traded third quarter field goals with Catawba having two touchdowns on the same drive called back by penalties.  A 40-yard field goal by Rollins with 12:30 left in regulation put Catawba up 30-24.  After being held on its newt possession, Newberry got the ball back with 5:38 left and started the game-tying march.  A key 22-yard pass from Stepp to Corey Seawell (Columbia, SC) on a third-and-17 from the Newberry 18 kept the drive alive.  Stepp later connected with Surratt from 11 yards out to knot the game at 30-30.

Stepp added 58 yards rushing to set a Newberry total offense record of 483 yards.  Deshon Rodell (Allendale, SC) led the ground game with 79 yards.  Stepp was 33-of-56 passes for 425 yards and the six scores.  Zimmerman also reached double-digits in catches with a dozen for 98 yards.  Roach had a career day for Catawba, throwing for 315 yards and three touchdowns on 19-of-36 passing.  Kory Fisher (New Bern, NC) ran for 85 yards and caught six passes for 38 yards.  The teams combined for 1,115 yards with Newberry holding a 604 to 511 edge.   Newberry threw for 425 yards, while Catawba threw for 336.
