Volleyball loses to C-N in fiveSALISBURY, NC -- Carson-Newman rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat host Catawba in five games in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Lady Eagles improve to 13-13 overall and 8-3 in the SAC with the 29-31, 32-34, 30-21, 30-27 and 16-14 win. Catawba falls to 9-14 and 3-7. Each team had five players post double-figure kill games with the Lady Eagles being led by Kelli Sorensen (Maple Grove, MN) and Meg Davis (Birmingham, AL), who each had 19. Freshman Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC) led Catawba with 18 kills while fellow freshman Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA) added 16. Catawba got out quick in the opening game, taking a 15-9 lead. The Lady Eagles rallied back to tie the score at 20-20 and eventually took a 29-28 lead after a kill by Sorensen. Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC) answered with a kill for Catawba and after an error, Powers killed off the initial game. Carson-Newman got an early 6-1 lead in the second game, but Catawba would slowly fight back and tied the game at 19-19 on an ace by Griffith. A kill by Kari Gibson (Celina, OH) gave C-N the only two-point edge down the stretch at 27-25, but Catawba scored three straight points, capped by a Powers kill for a 28-27 lead. Another Gibson kill put the Lady Eagles up 31-30, but two errors gave Catawba the lead until Gibson tied the game on a kill at 32-32. Two attack errors gave the Lady Indians the winning points. The Lady Eagles pulled away midway through game three and won easily, then rallied from a 26-24 deficit to win the fourth game. Two kills by Sorensen tied the game and a Gibson kill put C-N up 29-27. The Lady Eagles went on to win on a Catawba attack error. Catawba led 6-2 in the fifth game after a kill by Griffith, but a Sorensen kill pulled C-N within 8-7. Henderson killed a point to put Catawba up 11-9, but the Lady Eagles scored three straight points, including an ace and a kill by Gibson. Catawba took a 14-13 lead on an ace by Amanda Nantz (Troutman, NC), but a service error tied the game. Melissa Miller (Springfield, OH) had a kill to give C-N match point which came on a Tribe attack error. Miller had 20 digs for C-N with Blaire Young (Morristown, TN) adding 19 and Sorensen 18. Davis and Maia Ferry (Clinton, TN) each had three blocks, while Gibson had 13 kills, 14 digs and 57 assists. Missy Bartholomew (New Carlisle, IN) had 25 digs for Catawba with Griffith adding 19. Summer Zuck (Kingston, TN) had 15 digs and four aces and Henderson posted 14 kills, 16 digs and 58 assistst.
