Fisher runs for 141, defense records 10 sacks in Football's win over Tusculum
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba rallied for a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to defeat visiting Tusculum 28-20 in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. With the win, the Indians improve to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the SAC, while Tusculum falls to 2-6 and 0-5.
Catawba scored twice in the opening five minutes to grab a 14-0 lead. On its first possession, Brad Roach (Williamston, NC) connected on a 32-yard pass to Corey Ready (Aiken, SC) for a 7-0 lead just 2:08 into the contest. The next time the Tribe got the ball, Kory Fisher (New Bern, NC) broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and raced 33 yards for a 14-0 lead at the 10:00 mark.
Tusculum answered right back on a third down from midfield when Corey Russell (Speedwell, TN) found a wide open Jamichael Caldwell (Chattanooga, TN) to trim the margin to 14-7 at the 8:45 mark of the opening quarter. Tusculum struck again early in the second quarter when Phillip McGee (Clarksville, TN) capped a 65-yard drive with a four-yard run. Ron Ellington (Charlotte, NC) blocked the point after to keep Catawba on top at 14-13.
The Pioneers would take the lead just before the half. Russell converted a fourth down when he scrambled for a 13 yard gain and then hit Caldwell on a third down for a 19-yard score just seven seconds before the break. Russell threw for 238 yards in the opening half on 16-of-22 passing. Caldwell had seven catches for 117 yards and the two scores.
Neither team could score in the third quarter, but Catawba regained the lead with 9:03 remaining as Mario Crowe (Charlotte, NC) dove in from a yard out to cap a 16-play, 84-yard march that ate up nearly eight minutes of the clock. Tusculum was stopped on its next drive and faked a punt on fourth down, but Austin Hunter’s (Hartford, TN) pass was intercepted by Sam Greiner (Charlotte, NC). Fisher burst for a 28-yard run, then carried in from three yards out for a 28-20 edge with 5:22 to go.
Fisher finished the day with 141 yards rushing on 18 carries and two touchdowns. Roach was 18-of-29 passing for 192 yards with tight end Shane Timmons (Denton, NC) leading the receivers with four catches for 40 yards. Russell finished with 315 yards passing for the Pioneers, completing 22-of-34 passes. Caldwell finished with eight catches for 125 yards. Tusculum was held to 35 yards rushing, thanks in part to 10 Catawba sacks. Bryan Biggs (Fayetteville, NC) was credited with 4.5 sacks and eight tackles. Tusculum’s Marcus Robinson (Clarksvile, TN) led all players with 10 stops.
