Fisher breaks rushing mark in Football's loss at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, TN – Twenty fourth-ranked Carson-Newman used a strong running game and defeated visiting Catawba 33-21 in South Atlantic Conference football action on Thursday night at Burke-Tarr Stadium.  The Eagles keep their playoff hopes alive, improving to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the SAC.  Catawba falls to 6-4 and 3-3.
Catawba found itself in a hole at its own two-yard-line after the opening kickoff.  After a punt, Carson-Newman was unable to capitalize from the Catawba 43, but an Eagle punt again pinned the Tribe at the two.  The Eagles forced a punt and four plays later J.J. Chatmon ran in from 19 yards out to put C-N on top.

The Eagles went up 14-0 midway through the second quarter on a 24-yard run by Ray Hightower.  Corey Ready (Aiken, SC) sparked Catawba with an 82-yard kickoff return to the Eagle five, where Kory Fisher (New Bern, NC) scored to trim the deficit to 14-7.  C-N responded on Hightower’s second scoring run, from two-yards out with 3:24 left to grab a 20-7 lead at the break.

Catawba managed just 59 yards of offense in the opening half, while the Eagles totaled 20 first downs and 201 yards on the ground.

Hightower would score his third touchdown with 3:36 left in the third quarter and the Eagles took a 27-7 edge to the fourth quarter.   Catawba capitalized on an Eagle fumble at midfield early in the final period and Fisher scored from a yard-out to pull the Tribe within 27-14 with 9:08 remaining.

The Eagles got a key 53-yard run from Chatmon on a third-and-13 play on its next possession, but failed to score after a second missed field goal on the night.  Darrell Carlton would ice the issue a couple of plays later, retuning an interception 60 yards with 3:35 to play.  Catawba got a final score when Roach tossed a 36-yard pass to Antwan Strong (Charlotte, NC).

Fisher ran for 83 yards for Catawba and set a new single-season mark at Catawba with 1,040 yards.  Roach was 16-of-37 for 151 yards, but threw three interceptions.  Ready was the top target with five catches, moving within two of Nick Means’ school record of 185 career receptions.

Chatmon ran for 150 yards to lead the Eagle ground game, while Hightower added 101.  Alex Rouse ran for 66 yards and completed 4-of-5 passes for 27 yards.  C-N held a 354 to 270 edge in total offense, but Catawba out-gained the Eagles 211 to 126 in the final half.

On defense, Lester Sconyers (New Bern, NC) had 10 stops for Catawba with one for a loss.  James House (Salisbury, NC) had a sack and Marcus Huntley (Morven, NC) forced a fumble.
