Women's Soccer posts 11th shutout in tournament win over Presbyterian

SALISBURY, NC – Top seeded Catawba College used three second-half goals to knock off eighth-seeded Presbyterian College in the first round of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament Tuesday night at Frock Field. With the win the Lady Indians, ranked eighth in NCAA II, improve to 15-2-1 and advance to face Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday afternoon at Newberry College in the semifinals. The Lady Blue Hose end their season at 6-10-1. Catawba came out of the gates firing. McKenzie Burman (Rolesville, NC) had a breakaway in the opening minute and the rebound was followed up by two shots from Kelly Fearman (Alliston, ONT, CANADA). Delaney Crouch (Charlotte, NC) also had a breakaway in the opening half and a rocket from Burman was parried away by PC keeper Brittany Pecora (Myrtle Beach, SC). The best chance for the Blue Hose came off the foot of Claire Joyce (Aiken, SC), but she was high just in front of the keeper. The Lady Indians grabbed the lead in the 54th minute as Burman, the SAC Player of the Year, took a shot from 20 yards out that went across the goal and found the net for her 21st of the season and her 11th game-winner. Fearman picked up the assist. The Lady Indians iced the issue in the final 10 minutes as Kyley Thompson (Hagerstown, MD) and Burman got in all alone against Pecora with Burman feeding the senior Thompson for her seventh on the year. Crouch tallied with 1:50 remaining sealing the win for Catawba. Cathrine Balentine (Charlotte, NC) and Kathleen Blake (Greensboro, NC) combined on the shutout for the Tribe as neither had to make a save in the contest. Pecora made three stops for PC. It was fitting the way our players played for the seniors tonight, said Head Coach John Cullen. I would like to thank our seniors for leading from the front. Presbyterian also played well tonight. They pushed us the entire match.
