Volleyball falls in tight four-game match to WingateSALISBURY, NC -- Wingate University earned a hard-fought win over host Catawba in four games in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. Wingate took the match by the scores of 30-28, 29-31, 33-31 and 30-26 to improve to 22-4 overall and 11-3 in the SAC. The Lady Indians fall to 11-16 and 5-9. Rebecca Brezovec (Durham, NC) sparked the Bulldogs with 26 kills and four blocks. Lauren Allen (Bristol, TN) added 21 kills and five blocks. The Bulldogs as a team posted 11.5 blocks with Molly Kerns (Bellfontaine, OH) recording six with 19 kills. Amanda Siegrist (Wexford, PA) totaled 21 digs, while Melissa Deluca (Bahama, NC) tallied 69 assists. Three freshman led Catawba as Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC) posted 21 kills and seven blocks, Kalin Collier (Rural Hall, NC) had 15 kills and Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA) totaled 12 kills and a team-high 20 digs. Catawba led 10-4 early in the opening game, but the Bulldogs rallied and would go on top 27-21. Catawba cut the lead to 29-28, but Kerns was able to kill off the game point. In the second game, kills by Griffith and Powers gave the Lady Indians a 19-14 lead only to see Wingate rally to lead 25-24. Catawba got the lead right back and got kills from Powers and Collier to end the game. The Lady Indians would lead 16-13 in game three, but Wingate was able to tie the game with three straight points and neither team led by more than two points the rest of the way. Wingate served for the game at 29-28, but Summer Zuck (Kingston, TN) denied the Bulldogs with a kill and Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC) followed to give Catawba a 30-29 edge. A Kerns kill tied the game and Thompson killed the next point for a 31-30 Wingate lead. An error tied the game, but Alley and Thompson had kills to end the game. Catawba built an early 15-9 lead in the fourth game and led 25-16 before a Bulldog rally. Nicole Francis (Durham, NC) served up seven straight points with Kerns recording two kills and two blocks in the run to cut the deficit to 25-24. Powers ended the run with a kill, but it would be the final Catawba point of the match. Siegrist served out the final five points with Brezovec collecting four of the final five points on kills.
