LR shocks #8 Women's Soccer 1-0 in SAC Semifinals

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Lenoir-Rhyne’s Sam Upshaw (Middletown, Ohio) found the back of the net in the seventh minute and the Bears made it stand up, eliminating the top-seeded Catawba College Lady Indians from the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament by a score of 1-0. Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 9-8-3 overall and will face Tusculum in Saturday's final. Catawba has a 15-match non-losing streak snapped and fall to 15-3-1. The Lady Indians will now await word on who and where they will play in the NCAA II Southeast Regional beginning Friday, November 11th. Early in the match, L-R’s Cory Livesay (Round Hill, Va.) crossed into the box, where Upshaw knocked in the game-winning goal past Catawba keeper Cathrine Balentine (Charlotte, N.C.). Balentine had two saves in the loss. Lenoir-Rhyne’s Nicole Ley (Cupertino, Calif.) made eight saves off 15 Catawba shots. "I'm very proud of the run that the girls put together," said Catawba coach John Cullen. "It was a great run (14-0-1) to put us in this position. In the second half especially, we worked and worked and almost found a way to win it, but came up a bit short. Hopefully we can get refocused and look forward to an NCAA tournament run."
