Gilewala sends #23 Men's Soccer into SAC Finals with 2-1 win over Lenoir-Rhyne

Wingate, N.C.----Catawba College senior forward Zay-Zay Gilewala (Monrovia, Liberia) scored the match-winner in the 74th minute to lead the Indians to a 2-1 win over Lenoir-Rhyne College in the semi-finals of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer tournament, held Friday afternoon at Wingate University. With the victory, Catawba improves to 14-4-1 overall. The Indians will face number six Carson-Newman College Saturday at 2 p.m. (also at Wingate) for the 2005 tournament championship. Lenoir-Rhyne concludes the 2005 season 13-7-2 overall. A corner kick led to Catawba’s winning goal. Indian sophomore forward Troy Brown booted the corner kick to junior teammate Jason Dumond (Coppell, Texas), who found Gilewala for the match-winner. Gilewala has eight goals this season. The two teams were tied 1-1 at intermission. Lenoir-Rhyne struck first, as Bear freshman defender Shawn Brunk (Merritt Island, Fla.) netted his fourth goal of the season at the 11:56 mark of the first half. L-R freshman midfielder Gary Higgins (Paisley, Scotland) assisted Brunk on the play. Catawba answered in the 32nd minute, as sophomore midfielder Aaron Castaneda (San Antonio, Texas) tallied his first goal of the season. Brown notched the first of his two assists on the afternoon to set up the play. The Indians outshot the Bears 16-10. Catawba senior goalkeeper Dan Fitzgerald (Seaford, Del.) picked up the win, allowing one goal and recording three saves. Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore netminder Jonathan Sandlin (The Rock, Ga.) also went the distance in the nets.
