Ready sets receiving mark, but Football falls in season finale to 17-13 LR

SALISBURY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne grabbed a 17-10 halftime lead and held on to defeat host Catawba 17-13 in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field.  With the win, the Bears complete their season at 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the SAC, while Catawba finishes at 6-5 and 3-4.Lenoir-Rhyne opened the scoring in the first quarter as Andrew Tudor (Powell, TN) capped an 80-yard drive with a one-yard at the 4:57 mark of the opening frame.  Catawba followed up with a 27-yard field goal by Rush Rollins (Kannapolis, NC) early in the second quarter.  Chris Winford (Mooresville, NC) returned the ensuing kickoff deep inside Catawba territory which led to a six-yard pass from Kurtis Koester (Canton, GA) to Patrick Capers (Summerville, SC) as the Bears went on top 14-3

The Indians again answered as Brent Johnson (Hickory, NC) caught a five-yard pass from Brad Roach (Williamston, NC) with 9:15 to go in the first half.  The Bears would get the final score before the break as Andrew Coln (Simpsonville, SC) connected on a 31-yard field goal at the 2:32 mark.

The defensive battle continued in the second half.  Lenoir-Rhyne had a drive stopped by a Jasmon Carpenter (Black Mountain, NC) interception at the Tribe two-yard-line midway through the third quarter which started the lone scoring drive of the final half.  Catawba was backed up inside its own one-yard line when Roach completed a third-down pass to Rod Tenor (Cooleemee, NC).  The Indians went on to drive to the Bear one, but settled for a Rollins 21-yard field goal.  The drive of 93 yards took 19 plays and ate up 10:32 of the clock.

Catawba then stopped the Bears on downs at the Tribe 30, but Roach was intercepted at the Bear 15 with 2:52 left.   The Indian defense came up with one last stop and got Catawba the ball back with 1:12 remaining at its own 22.  Roach completed a third down and a fourth down pass to keep the drive alive that was also aided by two Bear holding penalties.  The last penalty came with just two seconds left at the LR 17.  Catawba’s final play was a completed pass to Trevan Davis (Thomasville, NC), but Tore’ Girty (Salisbury, NC) made the stop for LR at the four-yard-line to end the game.

Tudor led the Bears with 92 yards on the ground, while Koester was 12-of-20 through the air for 150 yards.  Winford made eight catches for 92 yards.  Catawba was led by Roach, who completed 26-of-47 passes for 261 yards.  Corey Ready (Aiken, SC) made seven grabs, breaking Nick Means' all-time reception record and finishing with 190 catches.  Tenor had six catches for 90 yards.  The Indians were held to just 60 yards on the ground, but held the total yardage advantage 321 to 284.
