Women's Basketball falls short against J.C. SmithSALISBURY, NC -- Johnson C. Smith and USC-Aiken were winners in women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym in the Catawba Classic sponsored by Comfort Suites. USC-Aiken (3-3) topped Lenoir-Rhyne (3-3) 65-62, while J.C. Smith (2-3) defeated host Catawba (1-4) 56-53. The Lady Golden Bulls led for much of the second half until Catawba’s Gia Colombo (Concord, NH) connected on a three-pointer with 5:53 to go to gice the Lady Indians a 48-46 lead. The basket ended a near six minute scoring draught by each team. Smith ended a six and a half minute scoreless span on a layin by Rochelle Bodie (Raleigh, NC) at the 5:35 mark to tie the game. A pair of free throws by Bodie with 2:08 left gave JCSU at 54-48 lead, but Catawba got back-to-back jumpers and a free throw by Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) to pull within 54-53 with 48 seconds to play. The Lady Indians suffered three turnovers in the final 30 seconds in an attempt to take the lead before Ashley Truesdale (Durham, NC) iced the game with a pair of free throws with 0.4 seconds left. Tiana Pope (Albany, GA) led all scorers with 23 points, while Shemika Jones (Largo, MD) added 11. Hannah Davis (Williamsburg, VA) led Catawba with 13 points, while Hampton tossed in 12. Catawba had 19 turnovers to just nine for J.C. Smith. USC-Aiken withstood a late Lenoir-Rhyne rally to record its three-point win over the Lady Bears. The Lady Pacers held a 58-44 lead with 8:51 remaining then saw L-R tie the game at 60-60 on a layup by Ashley Gordon (Fort Eustis, VA) with 1:13 left. Mindy Allee (Clayton, WI) connected on her fourth three-pointer of the game with 51 seconds to play to give the Lady Pacers the lead for good. Joanie White (Claremont, NC) scored off a rebound for the Bears with 24 seconds remaining, but Meredith Legg (Huntersville , NC) hit two free throws with 12 seconds left for the winning margin. Gordon was fouled on a drive with 1.4 second left, but failed to convert on either free throw attempt. Allee scored 14 points to lead USCA, while Kendra Chandler (Aiken, SC) scored 13 off the bench. Legg added 12 points with 10 coming in the opening half. White had a double-double for Lenoir-Rhyne with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Kristen Barringer (Greenville, SC) had 12 points and Sandi Hyatt (Albemarle, NC) tossed in 10. Pope was named the tournament MVP and was joined by teammate Jones on the All-Classic team. White, of Lenoir-Rhyne, Allee, of USC-Aiken and Catawba’s Davis and Hampton were also named to the team. #####
