Wooldridge posts double-double as Men's Basketball wins at Chowan
MURFREESBORO, NC -- Catawba got 18 points and 10 rebounds from Chris Wooldridge (Norfolk, VA) to defeat host Chowan 76-69 in men’s basketball action on Monday night at the Helms Center. The junior hit on 8-of-14 field goals to help the 14th-ranked Indians improve to 5-0. Chowan falls to 2-3.
Andy Thomson (Poynton, ENGLAND), who tallied 11 points, gave the Tribe its first lead at 6-5 on a layup at the 17:07 mark of the opening half and a pair of free throws by Helgi Magnusson (Reykjavik, ICELAND) gave Catawba an 8-7 lead and the Indians never trailed again.
Chowan managed to tie the contest several times after that, the last at 37-37 with 2:33 before the break. Catawba held a 43-39 edge at the half. Chowan stayed close by connecting on 56% of its shots in the opening half, but would cool down to 37% in the final 20 minutes.
A Thomson jumper just over four minutes into the final half gave Catawba a 53-43 lead and the Braves never got closer than six points the rest of the way.
Magnusson, with 14 points, and Jolly Manning (Rocky Mount, NC), who had 12 points, also reached double figures for the Tribe. Brian Graves (Newport News, VA) dished out six assists and had four steals.
Trayvon Latham led the Braves with 15 points and added seven rebounds and six assists. Marcus Artis had 13 points and four steals, while Isaac McCall and Jon Dyer each tossed in 10 points. Catawba shot 45% for the game, but was just 2-of-16 from three-point range. The Indians held a 42-32 edge on the boards.
