Davis' three-pointer keys Women's Basketball win over Fayetteville StateSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College built an early first half lead and held off visiting Fayetteville to earn a 64-58 win in women’s basketball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. Catawba improves to 2-4, while the Lady Broncos fall to 1-4.
Hannah Davis (Williamburg, VA) connected on Catawba’s lone three-pointer of the game with 2:59 remaining, snapping a 56-56 tie, to propel the Lady Indians. Selia Monroe (Springfield, VA) hit a pair of free throws with 59 seconds left and Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) added another with 31 seconds left to put Catawba up 62-56.
The Lady Indians canned 10 of its first 15 shots en route to a 27-15 lead with seven minutes left in the opening half. Fayetteville State would claw back into the contest by halftime, cutting the margin to 32-27 by the break. Catawba dropped off to 40% shooting for the half, but held the Lady Broncos to just 32%.
Fayetteville State would tie the game at 40-40 on a layup by Chelsea Jeter (Baltimore, MD) at the 12:55 mark and took the lead at 48-47 with 8:47 to go on a three-pointer by Tiffany Mitchell (Sanford, NC). The Lady Broncos would built as much as a five-point lead before Catawba rallied back to lead 56-55 on a jumper by Brittany Higgins (Takoma Park, MD). A free throw by Jeter with 3:32 tied the game just before Davis’ three-pointer.
Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, VA) led Catawba with 16 points, on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting from the floor, and added nine rebounds. Higgins tallied 10 points off the bench. Mitchell scored all of her team-high 15 points for Fayetteville State in the final half. Danielle Carter (Red Springs, NC) had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Catawba finished the game shooting 44%, while the Lady Broncos shot just 31%. Catawba had a 51-45 edge on the boards, but had 28 turnovers to just 16 for Fayetteville State. The Lady Broncos were just 3-of-22 from behind the arc.
