Men's Basketball goes to 9-0 with win over Virginia State
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba pulled away from visiting Virginia State in the final half to post a 100-79 win in men’s basketball action on Monday night at Goodman Gym. The Indians, ranked 17th in NCAA II, improve to 9-0, while Virginia State falls to 0-6.
Catawba led by four at the break and used a 7-0 run early in the second half to go on top 56-48. The Indians continued to pull away, grabbing a 65-55 lead with 12 minutes remaining. The Indians then surged with 14-3 run over the next five minute to lead 79-58 with 8:21 left. Catawba went on to lead by as many as 32 points.
Jason Diggs (Christiansburg, VA) came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points for the Tribe, leading six double-figure scorers. Brian Graves (Newport News, VA) added 15, while Helgi Magnusson(Reykjavik, ICELAND) and Chris Wooldridge (Norfolk, VA) each had 13 points. Phil Wiafe (Washington, DC) scored 22 points in a losing effort for Virginia State, while Michael Askew (Woodbridge, VA) tallied 18 points.
Catawba connected on 57% of its field goal attempts to just 43% for the Trojans. Catawba also held a 42-31 edge on the boards. Andy Thomson (Poynton, ENGLAND), with 12 points, and Ahmad Murphy (Orangeburg, SC), with 10 points, were the other two Indians in double digits.
