Cullen and four Women's Soccer players earn region honors

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba College, which finished the year ranked 15th in NCAA II, placed four players on the 2005 NSCAA all-region team, while John Cullen was named the Southeast Region Coach of the Year. The Lady Indians held four of the ten slots that comprised the region’s first team. Earning the honors were Cathrine Balentine, of Charlotte, NC, McKenzie Burman, of Rolesville, NC, Lindsay Layman, of Hagerstown, MD, and Kylie Thompson, of Hagerstown, MD. Balentine, a senior goalkeeper from Myers Park High School, posted a 0.66 goals against average and five shutouts for the Lady Indians. She also earned all-conference and all-region honors in 2004. Balentine finished her career with 21 shutouts and a 0.65 GAA. Burman, a junior forward from Wake Forest-Rolesville High School, was named the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year after setting a school record with 23 goals. She was also All-SAC and all-region last year and has scored 40 goals the past two years. Layman, a senior defender from Smithsburg High School, was an anchor on a defense that allowed just 12 goals in 21 matches and posted a dozen shutouts. She earned All-SAC and all-region honors in both 2004 and 2002. Over her career, Catawba recorded 47 shutouts in 82 matches. Thompson, a senior forward from Smithsburg High School, had seven goals and five assists in 2005. She earned All-SAC honors in 2003 and 2002 and was an all-region pick in 2002. Over her career, Thompson scored 46 goals and had 28 assists. Cullen just completed his fifth season at Catawba and has helped guide the Lady Indians to a 71-20-7 mark. This season he was named SAC Coach of the Year for the third time as Catawba equaled a school record with 16 wins and advanced the region championship match for the second straight season.
