Women's Basketball drops 59-43 decision at NC Central
DURHAM, NC -- Catawba dropped a 59-43 decision to host N.C. Central in women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at McLendon-McDougald Gym. The Lady Indians fall to 3-6, while N.C. Central improves to 7-1.
Scoring was at a premium in the opening half as the Layd Eagles posted a 17-11 lead at the break. Catawba hit on just 12.5% of its field goal attempts in the opening half, while NCCU made 28%.
Catawba scored the first four points and the teams were tied at 8-8 after 10 minutes. A pair of free throws by Hillary Hampton with 6:11 remaining pulled Catawba within 13-11, but the Lady Indians went scoreless for the rest of the half. The Lady Eagles posted its final points with 4:56 to go before the break.
The Lady Indians cut the deficit to 17-16 early in the final half, but NCCU went on a 14-6 run to go up 31-22 with 14 minutes to play. The Lady Eagles jumped ahead by 10 midway through the period and kept its double-digit lead for much of the way.
Hampton and Hannah Davis each scored 11 points to lead Catawba, who were out-rebounded by 41-27. NCCU was led by Cassie King, who scored 16 points. Latoya Jones tallied 12 points and Natasha Bailey posted 11 points and eight rebounds.
