Hampton sparks Women's Basketball to win in New Years ClassicSALISBURY, NC -- Host Catawba and Wingate were winners in opening night women’s basketball action at the New Years Classic sponsored by Comfort Suites on Monday at Goodman Gym. Wingate (7-4) rolled to a 102-78 win over Livingstone (4-5), while Catawba (4-8) knocked off previously unbeaten St. Augustine’s (9-1) 61-59.
Catawba used a 14-4 run to open the second half to take control against the Lady Falcons. Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) connected on four three-pointers in the run that gave the Lady Indians a 43-34 lead with 14:49 to play.
St. Augustine’s kept cutting into the lead, but was never able to tie the game. Valicia Brown (Riverdale, MD) hit a three-pointer with 10 seconds left to pull the Lady Falcons within 59-57, but Brittany Higgins (Takoma Park, MD) sank both ends of a one-and-one with eight seconds left for a 61-57 margin. NaTasha Lyons’ (Long Island, NY) layup with two seconds to go cut the lead back to a basket, but Catawba was able to run out the clock.
Hampton led Catawba as se equaled her career-high of 17 points. Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, VA) followed with 16 points and added nine rebounds, four steals, two blocks and dished out three assists. Hannah Davis (Williamsburg, VA) tallied 13 points, while Gia Columbo (Concord, NH) had eight assists.
Brown led all scorers with 32 points in a losing effort for St. Augustine’s. She connected on 10-of-16 from three-point range. Lyons and LaConya Polk (Menifee, AR) each had 10 points with Polk adding 11 rebounds.
Wingate rolled to a big lead by the half of the opener. The Bulldogs connected on 70% (19-of-27) from the floor and hit on 16-of-18 (89%) at the line to grab a 56-27 lead at the break. The Bulldogs held as much as a 33-point edge in the opening half. The Bulldogs never trailed and used a 16-1 run early in the game to break out to a 27-9 edge.
The Bulldogs cooled slightly in the second half, finishing the game at 62%, but Livingstone never got closer than 20 points. Veronica Taylor (Columbia, NC) led Wingate with 19 points, while Tanetra Barrett (Marshville, NC) added 17. Kim Westray (Norfolk, VA) and Kimone Johns (Bronx, NY) each tallied 13 points for Livingstone.
