Davis nets 23 as Women's Basketball wins league openerSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba rolled to a 78-57 victory over visiting Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians got 23 points from senior Hannah Davis (Williamsburg, VA) in improving to 6-8 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 7-7 and 0-1.
Lenoir-Rhyne struggled out of the gates, hitting just two of its first 26 shots. Catawba quickly jumped to an 18-2 lead after seven minutes. The Lady Indians led 35-13 with three minutes to go before the break then Lenoir-Rhyne rallied to cut the margin to 35-22 after a three-pointer by Kristin Barringer (Greenville, SC) with 31 seconds left.
Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) hit a key three-pointer for Catawba with six seconds to go to send the Lady Indians to the half with a 38-22 edge and connected on another just seconds in the final half to put Catawba up 41-22. The Bears never got closer than 17 the rest of the way with Catawba leading by 29 at 71-42 with 5:03 remaining.
The Bears shot just 19% in the opening half and finished at 26% (17-of-66), while Catawba hit on nearly half its attempts (30-of-61). Davis was the only Catawba player in double figures with Hampton adding nine points and seven rebounds. Ingrid Easter (Cana, VA) dished out seven assists. Shannon Jones (Warrenton, VA) had 13 points and 13 rebounds for Lenoir-Rhyne with Angela Danley (Snellville, GA) tossing in 11 points.
