Graves tosses in 22 points as Men's Basketball tops LR
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba, ranked 13th in NCAA II, got 22 points from Brian Graves (Newport News, VA) and defeated visiting Lenoir-Rhyne 76-66 in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Indians improve to 13-3 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 6-7 and 0-1.
Lenoir-Rhyne jumped on the Indians early and led 29-20 after a free throw by Marcus Springs (Charlotte, NC) with 6:31 to go in the opening half. Catawba would put together a 14-0 run, capped by consecutive three-pointers by Jamel Hamilton (Virginia Beach, VA) and Graves, to take a 33-29 lead at the 3:20 mark and.the Indians never trailed again.
The Indians went up by 14 early in the second half, but Lenoir-Rhyne cut the margin to 59-53 on a three-pointer by Eric Mauldin (Albemarle, NC) with 5:31 to play. Graves scored five straight points for Catawba and the Indians made 10-of-13 free throws down the stretch to hold off the Bears.
Graves led all scorers with Hamilton adding 13. Chris Wooldridge (Norfolk, VA) had 12 points and seven rebounds. Springs had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Bears with Josh Rudder (Graham, NC) adding 12 and Donte Watson (Fayetteville, NC) 10. Catawba shot 50% for the game, while the Bears hit just 38%.
