Women's Basketball falls at Wingate; Davis scores 22 in loss
Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University shot 57 percent from the floor and cruised to a 93-67 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena. Wingate, ranked No.1 in the South Atlantic Region, improves to 14-5 overall and 5-1 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 6-13 and 1-5.
Junior guard Tanetra Barrett (Marshville, N.C.) led Wingate with 20 points, 15 coming in the final half. Sophomore guard Kate Edwards (Laurinburg, N.C.) tossed in 12 of her 14 points in the opening half to stake the Bulldogs to a 45-36 edge at the break.
Wingate jumped out to a 10-2 lead and built the advantage to 24-12 midway through the opening stanza. Catawba made a run and cut the deficit to 32-27 with under six minutes to go in the half, but Wingate got a three-pointer by Edwards, her last of four on the night, to push the margin to eight.
Catawba was never within single digits in the second half as Wingate grabbed a 15-point lead at 55-40 at the 15:53 mark on a three-point play by Barrett. The Bulldogs would increase their edge to 28 points in the final minutes.
Wingate canned 57.4 percent of its field goal attempts to just 37 percent for the Indians. The Bulldogs made only 10 turnovers. Wingate also held a 43-31 edge on the boards. Senior Hannah Davis (Williamsburg, Va.) led all scorers with 22 points for Catawba, while junior Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, Va.) added 11. Wingate’s other double figure scorer was senior Veronica Taylor (Columbia, S.C.) with 10 points.
