Women's Basketball streak reaches seven games in 75-72 loss at LR
HICKORY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne held off Catawba 75-72 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday night at Shuford Gym. Leah Barrier (Morganton, NC) blocked Selia Monroe’s (Springfield, VA) three-point attempt from the top of the key as time expired to preserve the victory for the Bears. Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 9-12 overall and 2-6 in the SAC, while the Lady Indians drop their seventh straight decision in falling to 6-15 and 1-7.
Monroe’s three-point attempt was the only one of the night for Catawba, who had rallied back from a 13-point deficit early in the second half. Catawba used a 10-0 runs to cut the margin to 50-47 on a Hannah Davis (Williamsburg, VA) layup with 13:06 remaining. Monroe tied the game at 55-55 on a pair of free throws with 11:32 to go.
The game would be tied several times before Catawba finally grabbed a lead at 67-65 on Davis’ jumper with 3:05 left. The rest of the scoring for both teams came at the free throw line. The Bears made six to take a 71-67 lead with Monroe bringing Catawba within 71-69 on a pair with 58 seconds left.
Sandi Hyatt gave L-R a 74-69 edge with one of two at the line, but Monroe was fouled and made three free throws with 12 seconds left to pull the Lady Indians to within 74-72. Ashley Gordon (Newport News, VA) made only one of two with 10 seconds remaining to give Catawba a chance, but the final shot was blocked at the buzzer.
Shannon Jones (Warrenton, VA) led Lenoir-Rhyne with 16 points and seven rebounds. Barrier added 12 points, while Gordon and Ashlei Helton (Icard, NC) both finished with 11 points for the Bears.
Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, VA) scored 13 points to pace Catawba with Davis, Brittany Higgins (Takoma Park, MD) and Erika Tackett (Trinity, NC) each chipping in with a dozen points. Catawba shot 42% from the field compared to 41% for LR, but the Bears were 7-of-14 behind the arc, while the Lady Indians went 0-1.
Both teams were proficient from the line as Catawba made 24-of-28 (86%), including a 9-for-9 effort from Monroe, and LR 24-of-29 (83%). Catawba was also out-rebounded 39-32, but had only 14 turnovers to 19 for the Bears.
