Davis, Evans set career marks as Baseball sweeps #1 Florida Southern

LAKELAND, FL -- The Catawba baseball team enjoyed a super Sunday afternoon as the Indians swept a doubleheader from NCAA II top-ranked Florida Southern at Henley Field.  The Tribe took game one 3-1 and won 6-4 to complete the sweep.  Senior Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) set a new career RBI mark, while junior Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) became Catawba’s career save leader as the 24th-ranked Indians improve to 2-1.  The Moccasins fall to 2-2.
The Indians collected just five hits in taking the game one pitcher’s duel.  Sophomore Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC) tossed seven strong innings, allowing just seven hits and a single run, while striking out three.  Mark Smith (Brown’s Summitt, NC) pitched a scoreless eighth and Evans a perfect ninth with a pair of strikeouts in picking up his record 16th save.

Each team plated a run in the second with Catawba scoring the eventual game-winning run in the sixth.  Matt Smith (Brown’s Summitt, NC) led off with a triple and scored on Davis’ ground out.  The RBI gave the senior 167 in his career to break the school record.  The Indians picked up an insurance run in the ninth as Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) scored on a wild pitch.  Freshman Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) led the Tribe offense with two hits.

Catawba scored three times in the seventh inning of the night cap to snap a 3-3 tie and take the win.  Matt Smith scored from second on a wild pitch and Rimer followed with a two-run double.  The Moccasins got a run back in the seventh and got consecutive one-out singles before Evans struck out the final two batters looking to end the contest.

David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) led off the second game with a homer and Noah Johnson (Huntersville, NC) had a RBI single in the second to put Catawba up 2-0.  Will Cherry (Lakeland, FL) hit solo homers in the second and fourth innings to tie the score for FSU.  Each team plated a run in the fifth with Davis delivering a one-out RBI single and Adam Calderone (Springfield, VA) hitting a homer for the Moccasins.

Paul Link (Salisbury, NC) tossed five innings for the Tribe, allowing three runs on five hits with five strikeouts.  Brian Benton (Wallace, NC) tossed a perfect sixth with a pair of strikeouts and earned the win.  Thomas, Davis, Rimer and Johnson each collected a pair of hits in the nine-hit attack.
