Baseball moves to 3-1 behind strong outing from Fairweather

SALISBURY, NC -- Freshman Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) tossed six strong innings as NCAA II fourth-ranked Catawba defeated visiting Pfeiffer 4-2 in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Newman Park.  The Indians improve to 3-1, while Pfeiffer falls to 1-4.
Fairweather allowed just four hits and one unearned run over his six innings of work and struck out five in earning his first collegiate win.  He got relief help from four pitchers, including perfect innings of relief from Mark Smith (Brown Summitt, NC) and Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC).  Evans notched his third save and had two strikeouts.

The Tribe took the lead in the opening inning as David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) singled, moved to third on a stolen base and an error then scored on Matt Smith’s (Brown Summitt, NC) sacrifice fly.  Pfeiffer got on the board in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk by Mike McClain (Stoney Creek, NC).

Catawba broke the tie in the bottom half of the fifth on a two-run homer by Thomas.  McClain delivered another RBI for Pfeiffer on a ground out in the seventh, but saw Catawba get the run right back on a solo home run by Matt Smith in its seventh.

Matt Smith and Thomas each had two hits for Catawba as did Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) and Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC).  Ryan Brown (Concord, NC) and Jodie Groce (Graham, NC) each had two hits for the Falcons.  McClain took the loss for Pfeiffer as he allowed four runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings.
