Men's Basketball back in win column after 113-95 victory over NewberrySALISBURY, NC -- Catawba placed six players in double figures in recording a 113-95 win over visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. Catawba improves to 18-6 overall and 6-3 in the SAC, producing its highest point total of the season. Newberry falls to 7-13 and 2-7.
Newberry started hot out of the gates and grabbed an early 27-19 lead after nine minutes. Catawba heated up after that and took the lead for good at 29-28 on a three-pointer by Jamel Hamilton (Virginia Beach, VA). Catawba led 47-42 at the half and shot 74% in scoring 66 second-half points.
Catawba led 79-70 with nine minutes to play then used a 9-0 run to put the game away. Catawba shot 59% for the game and made 13-of-25 from behind the arc, hitting on 12 of its last 18 from long range. Newberry hit on 50% of its field goals.
Helgi Magnusson (Reykjavik, ICELAND) scored 18 points and dished out eight assists to lead Catawba. Hamilton, Chris Wooldridge (Norfolk, VA) and Jason Diggs (Christiansburg, VA) all added 17 points. Jolly Manning (Rocky Mount, NC) and Brian Graves (Newport News, VA) both added 13 points. Sammy Monroe (Mt. Olive, NC) posted a game-high 23 points for Newberry, while Zach Chandler (Greenville, SC) added 22.
