Johnson powers Baseball to 17-2 win at Belmont Abbey
BELMONT, NC – Catawba College picked up a 2-for-4, four-RBI outing from freshman Noah Johnson (Huntersville, NC) and a nine-run second inning leading the Indians to a 17-2 victory of Belmont Abbey in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon. Catawba, ranked #4 in NCAA II, improve to 4-1 overall, while the Crusaders fall to 1-4.
Matt Smith (Browns Summit, NC) put the Tribe on the board with a RBI-double, scoring David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) who led off the contest off with a two-bagger of his own. In the second, Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) blasted his first homerun of the year, a two-run shot giving the Indians and early 2-0 lead. Mark Smith (Browns Summit, NC), Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC), Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) and Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) all picked up a RBI in the frame, followed by Johnson’s bases-clearing double to cap off the inning.
Two Crusader miscues led to four more Indian runs in the fourth. Lefko picked up a one-out double and later scored on Johnson’s single later in the frame. Mark Smith added another RBI-single for Catawba pushing the Indians advantage to 14-0. The Crusaders struck in fourth with a solo-HR from Michael Gegorek (Salisbury, NC) with a Ryan Ronda (Miami, FL) RBI base hit in the sixth.
Baker picked up his third RBI of the afternoon with a single in the seventh while Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) belted a two-run shot in the eighth. Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC) picked up his first win of the season behind a five strikeout performance, surrendering just one run on four hits in his five innings of work.
