Men's Basketball holds on for win over Tusculum
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba built a 24-point lead early in the second half and held off visiting Tusculum for a 99-92 win in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Catawba improves to 19-6 overall and 7-3 in the SAC, while the Pioneers fall to 13-10 and 4-6.
Catawba jumped to a 12-2 lead after four minutes and held a double-digit edge for most of the half. Catawba hit on 54% in the opening half with the Pioneers staying close by making 21-of-23 at the line while making just 9-of-23 (39%) from the field.
The Tribe quickly built on its 47-39 halftime lead and rolled to a 68-44 advantage with 15:36 remaining. From there, the Pioneers began to cut into the lead and pulled within 70-61 following a three-pointer by Douglas Tshomba (Brussells, BELGUIM) with 10:49 left.
The Pioneers pulled within five with 4:12 left, but Jamel Hamilton (Virginia Beach, VA) canned a three for a 85-77 Tribe lead. Catawba made 11-of-12 at the line in the final 1:11 to hold off the Pioneers. Catawba hit on 53% for the game and made 22-of-26 at the stripe. Tusculum shot 43% and made 40-of-49 at the line the second-most made and attempted in school history.
Brian Graves (Newport News, VA) led Catawba with 19 points and nine assists. Jolly Manning (Rocky Mount, NC) made 7-of-8 field goals for 14 points, while Chris Wooldridge (Norfolk, VA) added a dozen. Tshomba scored 21 points for the Pioneers, while Gabe Story (Greeneville, TN) added 19 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Jordan Lear (Zanesville, OH) had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
