Baseball belts six homers in doubleheader sweep of St. Augustine'sSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College, ranked fourth in NCAA II, swept a baseball doubleheader form visiting St. Augustine’s on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. The Indians won by the scores of 18-0 and 10-1, improving to 6-1. The Falcons fall to 0-3.
Catawba rapped out 14 hits in the opener, while Mark Smith (Brown Summitt, NC) and Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) each collecting four RBI. Smith produced three hits, including a home run. Rimer and freshman Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC) also homered in the win.
Smith gave the Tribe the lead with a two-run triple in the first and had a two-run homer in a six-run third that put Catawba on top 10-0. Query hit a three-run shot in the sixth as did Rimer, who capped the scoring with a two-run blast. Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC) tossed five shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out six.
The Indians posted three more home runs in the nightcap, including a two-run shot by Query. David Thomas ((Winston-Salem, NC) and Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) also went deep. Paul Link (Salisbury, NC) earned the win on the mound, allowing one unearned run on four hits over five innings. He fanned seven.
Thomas led off the second game with a homer and Brian Sommer (New Port Richey, FL) singled home a run for a 2-0 lead. Sommer had a RBI-single in a four-run second as the Tribe blew the game open. Dennis Meshaw (Elizabethtown, NC) led the Falcons in game two with a perfect 3-for-3 outing. Sterling Walker (Broadnax, VA) had a hit in each game.
