Smith's, Rimer lead Baseball to 11-3 win over Pembroke

PEMBROKE, NC -- Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) and Mark Smith (Brown Summitt, NC) each connected on a two-run homer and had three RBI as Catawba beat host UNC Pembroke 11-3 in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Braves Field.  The Indians, ranked second in NCAA II, win their seventh straight and improve to 7-1.  The Braves fall to 5-3.
The Indians jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first thanks to back-to-back RBI-singles by Mark Smith and Rimer.   Catawba tacked on two more in the third as Mark Smith blasted a two-out, two-run dinger to right-centerfield.

UNCP responded in the fourth with a three-run double off the bat of Jorge Gonzalez (Rockland, NY).  Following three straight singles by Barrett Otto (Garner, NC), Jason Morales (Fayetteville, NC) and Tripp Lockhart (Lexington, NC), Gonzalez ripped a double into the left-centerfield gap that cleared the bases and cut the score to 4-3.

That would be the only runs scored off Tribe freshman starter Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC), who improved to 2-0.  He tossed six innings, allowed six hits, while fanning four.  He got relief help from Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC), who tossed two perfect innings of relief with three strikeouts, and Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC), who tossed a scoreless ninth.

The Indians put the game out of reach in the sixth as Rimer connected for his two-run homer, which was followed up by a Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) solo shot down the left field line.  With four more runs in the eighth, Catawba extended its lead to eight, 11-3.

Doing the majority of the damage for the Indians was Rimer, who had three RBI and two runs scored to go along with his four hits, and Mark Smith, who only had two hits, but plated three runs and scored three times.  Smith’s brother, Matt, also had four hits, while scoring twice and driving in two.

The Braves who only managed seven hits, compared to Catawba’s 12, did not make it any easier on themselves as they posted six errors on the day eventually leading to four unearned runs.
