Softball sweeps doubleheader from St. AndrewsSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba earned its first wins of the season by sweeping a softball doubleheader from visiting St. Andrews on Thursday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Indians won by the scores of 8-2 and 6-3 to even their record at 2-2. St. Andrews falls to 0-6.
Freshman Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC) staked Catawba to an early lead in the opener with a three-run homer in the first inning. The Knights cut the deficit to a single run in the third on a two-run double by Devane Rushing (Monroe, NC).
Catawba broke the game open in the fourth with a five-run frame. Lizz Dunkman (Festus, MO) started the scoring with a two-run single and Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) capped the inning with a two-run double. Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC) was the only player to enjoy a multi-hit game in the opener with a single and a double.
The Lady Indians jumped in front in the opening inning of the nightcap on a bad throw following a Jenn Mehl (West Creek, NJ) single. Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo, NY) had a RBI-single in the fifth to cut the Catawba lead to 3-1, but Dunkman delivered a two-run single in the fifth to stretch the lead to 5-1.
St. Andrews scored twice in the seventh, including another run-scoring single by Dobmeier, but Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) got out of the inning for her second win of the day. The junior tossed a pair of complete games. She allowed two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts in the opener and scattered 10 while fanning six in the nightcap.
Dobmeier had three hits for the Knights in the second game, while Erin Haugen (Fort Mill, SC), Mika Tanji (Honolulu, HI) and Amme Mason (Georgetown, CA) collected two hits. White and Mehl had two hits in the second game for Catawba.
