Women's Basketball picks up first road win of season at CN
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Catawba Lady Indians spoiled Senior Night for the Carson-Newman Lady Eagles Saturday night as they took a 64-57 decision in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday night at Holt Fieldhouse. The Lady Indians post their first road win of the season and improve to 8-17 overall and 3-9 in the SAC. The Lady Eagles fall to 15-9 and 7-4.Catawba used a late run in the final six minutes of the first half to grab a 35-26 lead at the break. The Lady Indians held Carson-Newman to just 29% shooting (9-of-31) in the opening half.
Catawba started strong to begin the second half, building a 47-32 lead on a jumper by Foster at the 16:06 mark. The Lady Eagles chipped into the lead and cut it to four points at 49-45 on a lay-up by Eboni Johnson (Columbia SC) with 8:53 remaining, but the Lady Eagles could get no closer. Freshman Brittany Higgins (Takoma Park, MD) hit a pair of key shots with the Lady Indians up by five in the final five minutes.
The victors were led in scoring by Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, VA), who had 14 points. Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) added 13 points with Higgins adding 12 and Selia Monroe (Springfield, VA) 10 points. The Lady Eagles were led in scoring by Nicole Avrett (Shirley, AR) who finished the contest with 16 points, the only C-N player to score in double figures. Tashea Ledbetter (Charlotte, NC) had 10 rebounds for C-N.
