White's homer gives Softball split with Augusta StateSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and visiting Augusta State split a doubleheader in softball action on Sunday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Jaguars took the opener 18-2, while Catawba rebounded to take game two 3-1. The Lady Indians now stand at 3-3, while Augusta State is 3-2.
A wild pitch and a two-run single by Anna Tedder (Watkinsville, GA) gave Augusta State a 3-0 lead after one inning in the opener. The Jaguars scored five in the second, getting two-run singles from Amy Dumas (McDonough, GA) and Danielle Metzger (La Palma, CA), and added three more in the third, including a two-run homer from Courtney Smith (Wetumpka, AL), for an 11-0 lead.
Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) picked up Catawba’s first hit in the fourth inning and the Lady Indians scored both runs in the fifth off wild pitches. Leigh Robbins (Carolina Beach, NC), Brooke Southerland (Dublin, GA) and Smith each had three hits for the Jaguars, while Smith and Tedder each had three RBI.
A two-out RBI double by Jennifer Tomlinson (Birmingham, AL) gave Augusta State a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two, but Catawba drew even in fourth when Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC) scored on a two-out wild pitch after opening the inning with a walk. The Lady Indians took the lead in the fifth as Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC) picked up a two-out bunt single and White followed with a two-run homer.
Rhoades was the only player on either team to collect a pair of hits in the second game. Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) tossed the complete-game win, allowing five hits with four strikeouts.
