Baseball drops third straight one-run decision to USC-Aiken

AIKEN, SC -- USC-Aiken, ranked 22nd in NCAA II, completed a three-game sweep against visiting Catawba with a 5-4 win in baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Henzndez Stadium. All three games in the series were decided by one run as the Pacers improve to 8-2. Catawba, ranked second in NCAA II, falls to 7-4. Casey Derhak delivered a one-out, RBI-single in the ninth inning to lift the host Pacers. Catawba had drawn first blood on USCA in the third inning. Matt Smith hit into a fielderís choice to push across Chad Baker to make it 1-0. Derhak delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the game in Aikenís third inning and Robert Davis delivered a clutch two-out single back up the middle to drive to give the Pacers a 2-1 advantage. Derhak finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. Darryl Pui led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and moved to second with two outs before Montoya Young singled through the right side to extend the margin to 3-1. Young had another big game for the Pacers going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. The Indians quickly drew back within one as Baker led off the fifth with a home run down the left field line. It was one of the few mistakes made by Jon Paul on the mound on the afternoon, tossing seven innings and allowing three earned runs on seven hits and three walks. He struck out a career-best eight in the no decision. After Steven Kinney added an RBI single in the sixth to make it a 4-2 game, Catawba used three hits and one error to push across two in the eighth to tie it up at 4-4. Smith led off with a triple to right center and Jimbo Davis then drove him in to pull Catawba within one. Jerry Sands sacrifice fly to left field scored Mark Smith to knot the game up. In the bottom of the ninth, Young led off with a single to center field. After Ian Kowalchuk sacrificed him to second, Zach Cooper reached on an error to put runners at the corners. Cooper stole second before Derhak singled up the middle for the game winner. Ryan Mitchell (1-0) gave up one hit and a walk, while fanning one in the ninth to pick up the win for the Pacers. Paul Link worked six innings surrendering four runs, only one earned, on six hits and one walk, while striking out three in the no decision. Davis, Matt Keply, and Noah Johnson each finished 2-for-4 to lead Catawba. #####
