#25 Baseball tops Belmont Abbey 7-6 in 10 inningsSALISBURY, NC-- A sacrifice fly from David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th propelled Catawba College to a 7-6 win over visiting Belmont Abbey in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Newman Park. The Indians, ranked 25th in NCAA II, improve to 9-4 on the year. The Crusaders drop to 4-11. Josh Haire (Mooresville, NC) put the Crusaders on top early with one of his two solo blasts in the first. Catawba responded with two of their own in the bottom of the frame as Mark Smith (Brown Summitt, NC) and Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) picked up RBI singles. Haire blasted his second shot with one out in the third to tie the contest at 2-2. Again, the Indians responded with two in the bottom half as Sands connected on a two out homerun while Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) slapped a RBI single. With the Indians leading 4-2 after three, Belmont Abbey responded with a pair of runs in the fourth. A solo shot from Seth Waller (Salisbury, NC) and a run-scoring double from Tyler McKenzie (Winston-Salem, NC) knotted the contest at four. Sands put the Tribe back on top with his RBI single in the fifth. The back-and-forth match-up saw the Crusaders regain the one run advantage as Robert Yero (Lake Mary, FL) blasted a two-run shot. Matt Smith (Brown Summitt, NC) would tie the contest at six with his RBI double in the eighth. Thomas would lift his sacrifice fly into centerfield with the bases loaded in the tenth, scoring Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) and sealing the win for the Indians. Mark Smith picked up the win in relief for Catawba fanning three in two innings of work. Trey Summerlin (Stanley, NC) took the loss for the Crusaders. On Tuesday afternoon, Mark Smith led off the top of the tenth inning with a solo-HR leading the Indians to a 5-4 win at Pfeiffer. Evans picked up the win in relief for Catawba.
