Matt Smith named SAC Baseball Player of the WeekROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba catcher/pitcher Matt Smith and Tusculum pitcher Brent Gabel have been named the South Atlantic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday afternoon.
Senior Matt Smith batted .435 for the week and drove in nine runs as #25 Catawba went a perfect 5-0. Smith had three multi-hit efforts, including a 5-for-6 day against Newberry, hitting a homerun with .ve RBI’s. The Brown Summitt, N.C. native had .ve doubles during the week and scored seven runs. Smith also earned a win on the mound, tossing six innings against Presbyterian. During the game against the Blue Hose Smith scattered seven hits surrendering only two earned runs. Smith improved his average on the year to .379 with 18 RBI’s. He has recorded 10 doubles and a pair of homeruns for the Indians.
Tusculum College senior pitcher Brent Gabel tossed 8.1 strong innings to lead the Pioneers to a 3-1 win over Lenoir-Rhyne College at the South Atlantic Conference Preseason Baseball Tournament. Gabel, a 6-2 native of Conneautville, Pa., scattered four hits, allowed a run, walked one, and struck out six. The 2005 SAC Pitcher of the Year and 2006 Preseason All-American retired the .rst 12 batters in a row and faced the minimum 21 after seven innings of play.
The SAC Player of the Week is determined by a vote of the eight sports information directors in the league.
