#15 Baseball wins sixth straight, 5-1 at PfeifferMISENHEIMER, NC – Catawba College, ranked #15 in NCAA II, picked up their sixth straight win with a 5-1 victory at Pfeiffer and Joe Ferebee Field on Thursday afternoon. The Indians run their record to 14-4. The Falcons drop to 5-16.
After four scoreless innings, Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) belted his fourth home run of the season to put the Tribe up 1-0. The Indians would tack on another run in the eighth as Brian Sommer (New Port Richey, FL) picked up a pinch-hit RBI single scoring Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC).
A three-spot in the ninth would seal the win for Catawba. Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) roped a double down the left-field line to lead off and would later score on a RBI base hit from Noah Johnson (Huntersville, NC). A Falcon throwing error kept the inning alive as David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) and Baker picked up run scoring singles.
Pfeiffer did manage to score a run in the bottom of the ninth as Brian Braxton picked up a one out RBI single, but Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) closed the door on the Falcons. Matt Smith (Brown Summitt, NC) picked up the win tossing five innings, allowing no runs on three hits. Jodie Groce was 2-for-4 for Pfeiffer, scoring their lone run.
