Hull singles home winning run as Softball takes 4-3 win over BartonSALISBURY, NC -- Senior Jess Hull (Deptford, NJ) singled home the winning run in the eighth inning as Catawba defeated Barton 4-3 in softball action at the 2006 Catawba Invitational Tournament on Saturday morning at Salisbury Community Park. The Lady Indians improve to 6-6 on the season.
Catawba grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC) delivered a run-scoring single and Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC) plated a run on a fielder’s choice.
Barton struck for three in the third to take the lead. Christina Gurley (Louisburg, NC) had a two-out single to score the first run and the tying run scored on a two-out Lady Indian error. Maddy Danesi (Hammonton, NJ) would put the Bulldogs on top as she followed with a RBI single.
After Danesi’s single, Catawba’s Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) did not allow another baserunner, sitting down 16 straight batters to allow the Catawba comeback. Baker got a rally started with a two-out single in the fifth and scored on Whiteside’s single up the middle.
After holding Barton in the eight, Amanda Mitchell (Huntingtown, MD) was placed at second in the international tie-breaker rule and was sacrificed to third by Ettinger. Hull stepped in a drilled a single under the glove of the Bulldog third baseman to score the winning run.
Ettinger allowed just three hits and one earned run with five strikeouts in the complete game win. Whitesides was 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Hull, Baker and Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC) had two hits for Catawba.
