#15 Baseball wins wild one to finish sweep over Wingate 11-10
SALISBURY, NC – With a full count and two outs in the bottom of the ninth down by three, Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) sent a three-run blast to centerfield capping the comeback as Casey Morris (Granite Falls, NC) would later bring in the winning run in the bottom of the tenth, sending Catawba College to a 11-10 win over Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. With the victory the Indians jump to 17-4 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. The Bulldogs drop to 6-15 and 0-3.
Wingate quickly jumped on the Tribe as Josh Benton (Gold Hill, NC) lifted a sacrifice fly in the first. A two-run double from Bryan Baylis (Pocomoke City, MD) capped a three-run second frame for the Bulldogs. Jay Barnes (Strasburg, VA) and Benton would smack RBI doubles in the third and fourth innings as Wingate took a 6-0 lead.
Trailing by seven in the bottom of the fifth, the Tribe would jump on the board with a David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) two-run double giving the Indians some life. Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC) cut the deficit to four on his RBI two-bagger in the fifth. Wingate would respond with two in the seventh as Benton would score on catcher’s interference, followed by Tim Bowman (Winston-Salem, NC) getting hit by a pitch, all this with the bases loaded.
After the seventh inning stretch the Indians were able to get a two-run double from Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) with Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) picking up a RBI base hit, followed by a Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) sacrifice fly to right cutting the Bulldog lead to 9-7 after seven. A solo-HR from Benton would put Wingate up by three heading to the bottom of the ninth before Evans’ dinger sent the contest to extra innings and Morris brought home the winning run reaching on an error.
After a wild three hours and 40 minutes that saw 21 runs, 24 hits and 10 pitchers, Evans recorded the win for the Tribe tossing three innings allowing one run on one hit. Nick Siega-Riz (Clemmons, NC) took the loss for Wingate. Barnes went 4-for-5 for the Bulldogs; Benton was 3-for-4 with his HR and two RBI. Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an infield single in the fourth.
