Sands extends hitting streak; #14 Baseball splits with Barton
SALISBURY, NC – Catawba College split a baseball doubleheader with Barton College in baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Newman Park. The Indians took game one 4-3, while the Bulldogs grabbed an 8-6 win in eight innings in the nightcap. Catawba, ranked #14 in NCAA II, goes to 18-5 overall. Barton moves to 12-9.
In the opener, the Indians put two runs up in the first on a Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) and later took advantage of a Bulldog error to take an early lead. Trailing 3-1 heading to the sixth, Barton’s Tyler Petty (Rocky Mount, NC) blasted a two-run homer to center deadlocking the contest at three. With the bases loaded and no outs, Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) was hit by a pitch bringing home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh giving the Indians the game one win.
Petty put the Bulldogs up in game two with a RBI single in the first. Barton would score two unearned runs in the second taking advantage of a pair of Catawba miscues. Down 4-0 in the fifth, Sands extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a RBI double down the left-field line. After a Travis Hollomon (Clayton, NC) RBI double, Sands lifted a two-run blast to left cutting the Barton lead to 5-3 at the end of six.
In the seventh, Barrett Martin’s (Willow Springs, NC) run scoring single gave the Bulldogs a three run lead before Catawba responded with three in the bottom of the seventh getting RBI doubles from Matt and Mark Smith (Brown Summitt, NC) and Sands’ fourth RBI in game two with a base hit to center.
Petty gave Barton the lead for good in the eighth as his two-out, two-run double down the right-field line was nearly caught by Sands, but popped out of his glove as he hit the ground on the diving attempt. Brent Godwin (Wilson, NC) shut the door on the Tribe in the bottom of the eighth picking up the save. Brock Godwin (Wilson, NC) picked up the win, while Justin Shelton (Walnut Cove, NC) suffered the loss for the Indians. Catawba returns to action tomorrow afternoon hosting #24 Shippensburg at 12 noon.
