Thomas propels #14 Baseball to 9-3 win over #24 Shippensburg
SALISBURY, NC – In a match-up of top 25 teams, 14th-ranked Catawba College defeated 24th-ranked Shippensburg 9-3 in baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Newman Park. The Indians jumped to 19-5 overall as Catawba Coach Jim Gantt picked up his 300th collegiate win, while the Raiders drop to 5-5.
A pair of homeruns in the first started things off as Raider Jeremy Hess (Lancaster, PA) traded solo shots with Catawba’s David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC). Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) picked up a RBI base hit in the opening frame sending his hitting streak to 15 games before the Indians tacked on an unearned run taking a 3-1 lead. Matt and Mark Smith (Brown Summitt, NC) each picked up a RBI with consecutive groundouts to second base boosting the Tribe lead to 5-1 after two innings.
Matt Smith would tack on his second run batted in with a fourth inning single to left with the Raiders Eric Dezell (Bel Air, MD) bringing a run home with his groundout in the top of the fifth. Shippensburg cut the lead to 6-3 with an unearned run in the seventh, but the Indians Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) blasted a three-run dinger down the right field line to seal the win for Catawba. Thomas finished the afternoon going 4-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored.
