Ettinger, Baker and Mitchell lead Softball to sweep of CokerHARTSVILLE, SC -- Catawba swept a doubleheader from host Coker in softball action at Saleeby Field on Wednesday afternoon. Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener and Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC) snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-run homer in the nightcap. The Lady Indians improve to 8-10 on the season, while Coker falls to 11-4.Ettinger allowed only three singles in the opener and walked one with three strikeouts. The Cobras threatened in the second with two outs, putting runners on second and third, but Ettinger induced a groundout to end the frame. Coker’s last effort came in the sixth with a pair of singles to put a pair of runners on with one out, but the junior hurler got a pop up and groundout to end the inning.
Catawba took the lead in the second inning as Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC) singled home a run and Amanda Mitchell (Huntingtown, MD) hit a sacrifice fly. Mitchell capped her day with a three-run homer in the sixth. Her four RBI led the way, while Baker had a pair of hits. Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) had a walk and single in her first game with the Lady Indians.
Coker took the lead in the second game on Eunice Nettles’ (Pelion, SC) single in the first. The Cobras led 2-0 before Catawba struck for three in the fifth. Hampton and Mitchell drew two-out walks which were followed by a RBI single by Lizz Dunkman (Festus, MO) and a two-run single by Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL).
The Cobras tied the game in the fifth on a single by Anna Lucas (McBee, SC), but Catawba answered in the sixth with Baker’s home run. Jenn Mehl (West Creek, NJ) was hit by a pitch to open the inning and Baker followed with the homer. Ettinger sat down six of the next seven batters to earn the win. In six innings, she scattered five hits and allowed two runs, one earned, while striking out three. Markham collected three hits in the win.
